Pace Academy Athletic Program
At Pace, our focus is developing world-class students who learn to apply the lessons learned on the field to the game of life. The Pace athletic program gives every student the chance to explore a variety of sports at different levels. Instead of limiting student athletes to one sport, we encourage them to participate in more than one team.

Many of our 64 teams are “no cut," and more than 85 percent of our Middle and Upper School students play at least one sport. We produce championship teams and All-state, All-American and Academic All-American athletes. Our players are recruited by powerhouse colleges, and our graduates go on to play for NCAA Division I schools as well as professional teams.

So whether your student is sprinting for a pass or stepping up to bat, we know that playing on a team builds confidence. Our athletes learn to take risks and to win or lose with equal grace.

Harrison Moncino: Athlete of the Week
2/1/2012
The Northside and Sandy Spring Neighbors have named freshman diver Harrison Moncino Male Athlete of the Week. Moncino has already qualified for the Class AAAA-A state championships and, according to the papers, has "re-written the record books at Pace in an astonishing campaign."

Here's the article:

Given the way Pace diver Harrison Moncino is performing as a freshman, the Knights are marveling that they will have his talents another three years.

Moncino has already qualified for the Class AAAA-A state championships Feb. 10 and 11 at Georgia Tech, and he’s re-written the record books at Pace in an astonishing campaign.

“Based on where he is and how quickly he’s developed and to be at the level he’s at as a freshman is really some-thing,” said Pace varsity diving coach Jim Ebert.

With a score of 461.65 points in his first high school 11-dive meet Dec. 17 at the Madeleine Jude Brown Invitational at Emory, Moncino already shattered the Pace record of 315.40 set in 1999 by Dennis Arrowsmith. He has seven other first-place finishes this year.

Moncino, who also trains at Georgia Tech with the Atlanta Diving Association, has been diving from age 6 on and has won the Greater Atlanta Diving championship every year since in his age group.

“He’s very mature about the sport,” Ebert said. “He’s an absolute pleasure to have on the team because he’s very dedicated, very focused, and when you talk to him, he can tell you how he feels on his dives and have a dialogue that a lot of kids can’t have.”

Zwecker, Rushton to Play at Amherst, UPenn
1/12/2012
Pace Academy seniors Haley Zwecker and James Rushton have committed to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Zwecker will play basketball for Amherst College’s Lord Jeffs, while Rushton will join the Quakers, the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s soccer team.

Both students have been outstanding athletes for the Pace Academy Knights. Zwecker, a point guard, helped lead the Knights to a second-place finish in the 2011 state tournament. During the 2010-2011 season, she had 354 points and set a new school record with 188 assists. Zwecker was named to 2011 Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State First Team, to the Region 5A All-Region Team and to the Macon Christmas Tournament All-Tournament Team.

"Haley is a savvy point guard who is leaving a remarkable legacy at Pace,” says Knights Head Coach Regina Tate. “She plays by instincts that were laid during her days of playing against boys in the NYO leagues of her youth. I am honored to have had the opportunity to coach a young lady who allowed me to truly get to know her as an athlete and a person. Haley cares deeply for her teammates, her family, her academics and her sport participation. Amherst is lucky, and I know Haley will contribute positively to the winning tradition already established there."
Zwecker also plays varsity soccer for the Knights and is this year’s team captain. She was named to the 2010 and 2011 All-Area Teams and received the 2010 Playmaker Award.

Rushton, the Knights’ center midfielder, was part of the 2011 Area Championship team that reached the Final Four with a 14-3 record. Last season, he had 14 goals and 8 assists, including a hat trick against Athens Academy and two goals in a 3-1 victory over Class AAA’s North Atlanta High School. He was named to the All-Area Team in 2011.

"James is a talented player who has a unique understanding of the game,” says Knights Head Coach Brooks Fleming. “He can truly dictate the flow of a match through his style of play and skills. His presence in the midfield will be greatly missed next year."

Girls Win Westminster Holiday Classic
1/6/2012
The Pace Academy girls basketball team defeated Kennesaw Mountain High School to win the Westminster Holiday Classic Championship on Dec. 29. David Rutz of the Northside Neighbor reported:

Veteran in key areas, youthful in others, the Pace girls basketball team finished off 2011 at the Westminster Holiday Classic by doing what it did all year: win.

And it was a good omen to welcome in 2012.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Morgan Batey scored 32 points, including a pull-up 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, and All-Tournament team member Haley Zwecker had 20 as the Knights (7-2) beat Class AAAAA team Kennesaw Mountain 57-50 Thursday in the championship game.

“I wouldn’t say that we’re young, because I have Haley and Morgan as seniors, and they’re our primary offense,” said Pace coach Regina Tate. “From every other position, it’s inexperience all over the place. This was huge for us to be able to come in here and win this tournament.”

Buoyed by Batey’s big shot and bravura performance, the Knights outscored Kennesaw Mountain 9-2 in extra time to put the game away.

Yet, everybody was needed in this one.

Evelyn Hobbs played a huge role defensively, coming up with seven steals and seven rebounds.

“Morgan and Haley are picking up the slack for us on the offensive end,” Tate said. “On the defensive end, I have Evelyn Hobbs, and she’s got deflections all over the place. She’s holding it together for us.”

Lindsey Zwecker had a season-high eight rebounds, and freshman Lauren Hadley, a junior varsity player last month now pressed into starting duty because of a knee injury to senior Claire Quintrell, came through as well.

“[Thursday’s] win was everybody stepping up,” Tate said.

The Knights trailed 17-16 at halftime, then appeared to take control with a 20-point third quarter and a 36-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

But the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to take a two-point lead, 38-36. Haley Zwecker hit a 3-pointer to reclaim the advantage, but the Mustangs battled back to go up 45-42 before Batey stepped back and banked in a 3 to knot it up with less than a minute remaining.

Undeterred, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead with 10 seconds left on another 3-pointer. Batey took the inbounds pass, dribbled the length of the floor and swished a 3 as time expired to send the game to OT, sending the Knights into a frenzy.

With the momentum firmly on their side, the Knights dominated the extra period defensively. Batey hit a jumper to open the scoring and Pace didn't trail again.

"It’s one of those things, as a coach, you’re just glad you have talented players," Tate said. "She's playing amazing basketball right now."

Pace won its first tournament game 45-24 over Athens Academy Tuesday, and then routed Class AAAA squad Pope 55-32 the next day. The Knights next visit St. Francis and Wesleyan Jan. 3 and 7.

Senior Morgan Batey Signs with Vanderbilt
11/9/2011
Pace Academy guard Morgan Batey committed to play basketball for the Vanderbilt University Commodores during a signing ceremony on November 9. Batey, a standout player who led the Knights to a second-place finish in the 2011 state tournament, scored 643 points last season and had 462 rebounds, a school and state record. Other recent accolades include:

2010-2011: Region 5A Player of the Year; AJC Class A All-State Player of the Year; AJC South Fulton All-Metro Player of the Year; GACA Class A Player of the Year; Northside Neighbor Athlete of the Year; Jackie Bradford Atlanta Tip-Off Honorable Mention; GACA Junior All-Star Team

2009-2010: Region 5A All-Region Team; Second Team All State; First Team All-South Fulton team; First Team GACA All State; 576 points and 284 rebounds

2008-2009: Region 5 A All-Region Team; 435 points and 228 rebounds

Batey is also co-president of the senior class and a Peer Leader, one of a group of seniors chosen to mentor freshmen students throughout their ninth-grade year. She was a member of this year's Pace softball team.

During the signing ceremony, attended by Batey’s family, friends, coaches and teammates, Pace Academy Head Coach Regina Tate congratulated Batey on her accomplishments. “This is your day,” Tate said. “Your goal was to play at the next level, and you’ll be playing in one of the best women’s basketball conferences in the nation. Pace is proud of you.”

Batey’s teammates also applauded her efforts. “Morgan leads quietly by example,” said senior Claire Quintrell. “She holds herself to a higher standard, and that makes us all better. I couldn’t ask for a better teammate and friend.”

The Knights kick of the 2011-2012 season against Spalding High School on Friday, November 18, at 6 p.m. in Pace Academy’s Inman Center.

Boys Get Through to Semi-Finals
5/5/2011
Lead by Seniors Jared Wasserman and Jeffrey Sureck, the boys beat a tough Aquinas squad 3-0 today in Augusta.

Results in order of finish:
#1 Doubles - Jared Wasserman/Daniel Gray. 6-1, 6-0
#2 Doubles - Joey Kimmel/Marshall Harbin. 6-4, 6-1
#2 Singles - Jeffrey Sureck 3-6, 6-1, 6-3  (clinched)
#1 Singles - Steven Zeldin 3-6, 6-3, 3-2 (dnf)
#3 Singles - Jay Kumar 7-5, 6-7, 2-0 (dnf)

Match Notes:
Jared and Daniel's doubles match score belies the tight points and close games in their match.

Joey and Marshall had six match points before clinching.

Jay got in last night at 11:00 pm from a chess tournament in Nashville and after getting off to slow start was blistering the ball in the third set. Steven, despite having a strained muscle, fought back to take second set and the lead in the third.

The match of the day belonged to Jeffrey. Jeffrey's opponent was an athletic counter puncher who didn't miss and took all the pace off the ball. Points in the third set were dramatic. Many times it would take a dozen shots before Jeffrey could take the offensive. In the end Jeffrey persevered with a mixture of dogged steadiness and slashing net attacks.

Now it's on to the Final Four on Saturday against the #1 team in the state, Brookstone.

Congratulations guys!
