Girls & Boys Tennis Advance to Final Four

The varsity girls and boys tennis teams continued their march to the state tournament this week. The girls started things off when they traveled to Augusta on Monday, April 26, to play Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School.

From the beginning of the match, the doubles teams established themselves as the superior teams. The #2 doubles teams of seniors Grace Funston and Sidney Silver were first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Shortly thereafter, the #1 doubles team of senior Sidney Funston and sophomore Brooke Brumfield also won their match 6-0, 6-0. With all the attention on the singles matches, junior Kate Jonas provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #3 singles. When the match was stopped, sophomore Caitlyn Pinsker was ahead against a very tough opponent at #1 singles, and freshman Paige Massey was up a set and a break at #2 singles. The girls will host their semifinal match on the hill; the date has not yet been determined.

Wanting to follow up on the girls performance, the boys headed down to Bacon County High School for their quarterfinal match on Tuesday, April 27. Amazingly, the scores from the first three matches to finish were the exact same as in the girls’ match. First off the court was the #2 doubles team of senior Matt Genser and junior Jude Black, followed shortly thereafter by senior Jordy Elster and junior Cole Kaplan. Senior Eli Mautner provided the clinching point at #3 singles. Even though the match was clinched, the #1 and #2 singles players were only a game away from victory, so they were able to finish their matches. Freshman William McMullan won at #1 singles, and sophomore Hunt Stevens won at #2 singles. The boys will play their semifinal match at either Bleckley County or Callaway.
