Recapping a Busy Week for Girls & Boys Tennis

The varsity girls and boys tennis teams have had a stretch of four matches in the past five days, trying to get as much work in as possible before the break.

The girls team swept all of the matches, beating North Oconee 4-1, Athens Academy 5-0 and Riverwood 5-0. Then, as daylight was fading on Feb. 24, the Knights capped off the great stretch with a 3-2 victory over Westminster. The clinching point of the match came from sophomore Caitlyn Pinsker at #2 singles. Pinsker and her opponent both displayed a remarkable level of consistency and mental toughness, but in the end, Pinsker was too tough. Her victory—along with wins by the #1 doubles team of senior Sidney Funston and sophomore Brooke Brumfield and the #2 doubles team of seniors Grace Funston and Lily Kahn—gave the Knights the 3-2 edge. In the matches earlier this week, senior Sidney Silver, junior Kate Jonas and freshman Paige Massey also picked up wins.

During the same stretch of matches, the boys team ended with a 2-2 record. They picked up a pair of 4-1 wins against Athens Academy and Riverwood, but fell to North Oconee and Westminster. In the win against Athens Academy, the victories at #1 singles by senior Matt Genser and at #2 singles by sophomore Hunt Stevens highlighted the win. Against Westminster, the standout performance came from the #1 doubles team of senior Jordy Elster and freshman William McMullan. Though they lost the first set quickly, the team of Elster/McMullan rebounded to win the second set and super-tiebreaker, played in lieu of the third set. Other wins throughout the week’s matches came from the #2 doubles team of senior Eli Mautner and junior Jude Black

Both teams will resume play when we return from spring break.
