State Wrestling: Three Quarter Finalists, One Medal

Sophomores George Blaha (113 pounds), Sam Howe (132 pounds) and Xavier Agostino (HWT) traveled to Macon over the weekend to compete in the wrestling state championships. All three wrestlers won their first matches of the day and advanced to the quarterfinals.  

After beating a senior from Jefferson in his first match, Howe lost to the eventual champion from Pierce County, and then lost a close one, 5-3, to his opponent from Morgan County. He finished the season with 45 wins, 28 of which were pins, to lead the team in both categories.  

Agostino won his first match in overtime against the heavyweight from Hart County, but lost in the quarterfinals to a tough wrestler from Central Macon. His next two matches were close. He beat his opponent from Brantley County 4-3, and then lost to his opponent from Sonoraville 3-5. Agostino finished the season with 33 wins, 22 of which were pins.  

Blaha won his first match, easily earning a technical fall over his opponent from Brantley County with a score of 15-0. In his second match, he lost to the eventual state champion from Adairsville 9-21. In the consolation round, Blaha wrestled four very close, hard-fought matches. He won the first against East Jackson 6-5; he won the next against Jackson County in overtime 6-4; he lost the third against North Hall 2-4; and he lost the fourth against Pierce County in overtime, 7-9. Blaha finished in sixth place overall and is Pace’s second-ever state placer in Class AAA. He finished the season with 34 wins and 19 pins.
