Marist hosted a last chance meet on Jan. 24, and the varsity swimming and diving teams took full advantage of the opportunity. The boys medley relay team of seniors Carter Freudenstein and Barrett Hight, junior Lane Canova and sophomore Reid Richardson kicked off the meet with an improved state-qualifying time and a new school record of 1:38.39. The girls medley relay team of freshman Grace Richardson, sophomore Kate Cunningham, junior Claire Easterling and freshman Samantha Dubovy lowered the state time to improve their ranking.
In individual events, junior Walker Smith raced in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and both efforts improved on his season’s bests! Dubovy raced in the 50 free as well and equaled her best performance of the season. In the 100 free, R. Richardson earned a state-qualifying time. Cunningham also competed well in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke. Freudenstein swam the 100 fly to prepare for the state meet, and senior Corey Lochan took two shots at qualifying in the 500 free, racing very well.
The girls 400 free relay—Dubovy, Richardson, Easterling and senior Anna Zinman—needed to drop almost 4 seconds to make the cut for the state meet. Not only did they quality, but they did so by 4 seconds! Well done, Knights!
The Knights now have 27 individual and relay state-qualifying times for the GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday, Feb. 4.
