A New Start for Pace Debate

This fall, Upper School debaters have a new coach—Eric Forslund has joined the faculty as director of speech and debate. Forslund, a collegiate All-American debater, comes to Pace from debate powerhouse Greenhill School and hopes to continue Pace’s longstanding tradition of excellence in policy debate.

Under Forslund’s leadership, debaters will tackle the National Speech & Debate Association’s 2020-2021 topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should enact substantial criminal justice reform in the United States in one or more of the following: forensic science, policing, sentencing.

To prepare for the season, several sophomore members of the team participated in virtual debate camps over the summer. Forrest Pollard and Luca Tanasa attended camp through Dartmouth College; Hanna Yilma participated in Georgetown University’s program; and Kabir Singh attended Stanford University’s camp.

Over the weekend of Aug. 29, Pollard and Yilma (pictured) kicked off the season at a virtual practice tournament facilitated by Montgomery Bell Academy. Pollard was named the tournament’s second-best speaker, while Yilma was fourth. Stay tuned for additional debate updates as the year progresses.
