Members of the Upper School debate team kicked off their season at the Marist Ivy Street Invitational on Sept. 25 and 26. Freshmen Stephen Yang and Jack McMullan were named tournament co-champions in the Novice Division after defeating a Westminster team in the elimination round. Yang finished as the tournament’s sixth best speaker, while McMullan was 10th.

In the rookie division, freshmen Nailah Beachem and Leah Negero finished in ninth place. Freshmen Kaitlyn Goldberg and Aalia Mirza finished 4-1 after prelims and were second seed. They lost in the quarterfinals on a 2-1 decision. Competing against 50 students at her first-ever tournament, Mirza was named the tournament’s top speaker; Goldberg was second.
